Five things I refused to learn...
- I refused to try a black background. I really like color and feel limited when the background is black.
- I refused to learn center text. I always do left justified because it feels comfortable to me.
- I refused to try breaking too many type rules.
- I refused to mix fonts too much. I typically stick to one or two fonts at one time. I notice other students used a variety of fonts very well.
- I refused to leave too much negative space.
Five things that I should have learned...
- Devin portrayed hierarchy really well. His pages flow really well and are very legible. While on some of my spread, I felt like the audience might get a little lost.
- Kayla did amazing with utilizing half sheets in her publication. I really like the variety of different sized pages. It keeps things interesting as you are flipping through.
- Alyssa placed her type on her page in creative ways, but she did it in a way that worked really well. Even thought something seemed like it was random, I could tell she made a design decision.
- Aubrey used clear sheets that I found to be very pretty and created good dimension on her spreads.
- Delaney used a gradient beautifully in her design and carried all the way through. I really like gradients but have a hard time making them look right.
Five things that I learned about type...
- The importance of preparation and planning. Before this class I would jump into an project without creating a brief or a brainstorming. Even thought the process seems more tedious it is very useful in the end. I like having multiple ideas to work off of and mold.
- Using grids keeps things organized and clean. Having a grid system and setting up all of my columns made it much easier for me to keep my pages consistent.
- Type can be used to portray a message outside of the words that are being used.
- There is a lot more that goes into typography than people think. I learned that you can get really wild with type or practice the " less is more" method. Either way, there are endless options. It just takes a lot of experimentation and willingness to try something different to find what really speaks to you.
- InDesign is an amazing tool that made this final project so much easier. At first I wasn't going to use it, but I learned the advantages of using a formatting program.
